02 — The Specimen

The specimen

Who he is, before the region has introduced itself.

Every honest story of Sinnoh begins with a round animal in the grass. He is a Normal-type, numbered 399, and he is already there when you arrive. The tall grass at the edge of a new map is full of him. Most travelers step through on the way to a rarer prize. This room stays with the one they stepped through.

They call him the Plump Mouse. The name fits the body. A life beside water keeps what it needs close, and so he is round. He is common because a place is made by what shows up every morning, the animal already at work while the legends are still putting on their coats.

In time the mouse becomes Bibarel, and the rivers acquire dams. Read the change as a continuation. The work was underway in the grass. The dam is the moment you can see it from the bank.

03 — Riparian Life

A riparian life

Teeth, water, and a nerve that does not flinch.

The front teeth keep growing, so the days are spent bringing them down to size. A log, a stone, the soft lip of the bank: each one is tool and task. For him, industry is dental. The mouth is a workshop that happens to be attached to a very calm animal.

He nests where the ground stays damp. Small companies of him hold the ponds and the slow bends, a modest republic organized around gnawing. The old observations speak of nerves that hold, and of a body quicker than its outline suggests. A creature that quiet asks for very little. A river. Something to shorten.

  • 01 Incisors that do not rest
  • 02 Nests along the water
  • 03 Quicker than the outline

04 — The Dominion

The unofficial dominion

Industry without spectacle. A river edited by teeth. A nation that would know the silhouette.

This room keeps a resemblance, and labels it as one. In 1975 the beaver became the national animal of Canada: the editor of rivers, the patience that turns into architecture, the face on the five-cent coin. Bidoof is that sentence, spoken with two incisors and no ceremony.

He keeps to water. He brings timber down to a useful length. He works in a register that refuses applause, which is how a great deal of a country is actually made. Hang the plump mouse beside the nickel. Let the visitor feel the rhyme. Call the feeling a dominion, and keep the word unofficial, where a museum can reach it.

Sinnoh keeps the question of origin. This gallery keeps the mirror: stay by the river, and build. Canada did not commission him. Anyone who has held that coin will still recognize the job.

05 — The Polymath

The polymath

Ask, and it is already learned.

Five field arts from the Sinnoh years, all of them his. A road can ask for a specialist. It received a plump mouse, and the mouse was sufficient.

Surf

Cross the water

Do you wish to cross the water? He learns the stroke. A plump mouse on the face of a lake is a complete argument.

Sinnoh

Cut

Open the thicket

Do you wish to open the thicket? He learns the cut. The path was already there, waiting on an animal willing to be useful.

Sinnoh

Bidoof in a hard hat and safety vest pushing a carved boulder through a forest
Bidoof No. 03

Strength

Move the boulder

Do you wish to move what will not move? He learns the strength. Boulders are indifferent to pedigree. They answer him.

Sinnoh

Bidoof crowned on a summit, breaking a boulder with one fist
Bidoof No. 04

Smash

Break the wall

Do you wish the wall to become a door? He learns the break. In his curriculum, an obstacle is a courtesy.

Sinnoh

Bidoof in climbing gear and a crown, scaling a cliff above the peaks
Bidoof No. 05

Climb

Take the cliff

Do you wish to go up? He learns the cliff. The heights keep a place for the wingless.

Fight

Stand your ground

And if you wish to fight, he fights. The animal who ferries, clears, lifts, breaks, and climbs will also stand. This issue calls it range.

06 — Three Virtues

Three virtues

The temperaments recorded for him, read as character.

I

Simple

The world answers twice

A kindness arrives doubled. A blow does the same. He keeps every lesson at full volume, and calls that honesty.

II

Unaware

He addresses what is there

Another creature may swell into a monument. He speaks to the animal underneath the performance, as if the display had never been raised.

III

Moody

The interior weather

One quality rises like a bell. Another sinks. The change comes without apology, and he remains, which is his only consistent policy.

07 — Benediction

Benediction

Bibarel comes after, and with him the dam: a river persuaded to hold still. That chapter waits downstream. This one ends where most journeys actually begin.

The grass offered him before you had a taste for the rare. He was common on purpose, the first gift of the road, and still the correct one after your taste arrived.

The ordinary divine is in no hurry.
